The tragic events on September 11, 2001 had a global impact, forever changing the world. But in New York City, 9/11 is a personal tragedy. In addition to the tremendous loss of lives at the World Trade Center, the city was devastated physically, economically and emotionally. As a New Yorker who personally experienced the catastrophe, I share the struggle to come to terms with 9/11 and its traumatic events.
On this walking tour, I’ll take you on a New Yorker’s personal journey through 9/11. We’ll visit sites that played a key role in the tragedy, including the church that became the center of rescue efforts, site of the first 9/11 memorial, physical remnants of the original World Trade Center and, of course, the moving September 11 Memorial.
As we explore, I’ll share information that gives context for 9/11. You’ll hear about other terror attacks on Lower Manhattan (before and since 9/11), the creation of the original World Trade Center, and the 1993 bombing of the North Tower that held the seeds of 9/11. We’ll also marvel at the extraordinary architecture of the new World Trade Center, while I explain its design and symbolism.
Finally, I’ll recount extraordinary tales of heroism on September 11, and miraculous stories of survival. And I’ll share personal experiences from the chaos of that day, and the lingering effects of the tragedy of the people of New York.
