Harlem is a legendary place. Known as the “Black Capital of America,” Harlem has produced groundbreaking works of art, literature, and music that transformed global culture. Now, after decades as a notorious ghetto, Harlem is experiencing a new renaissance.
Join me, a resident of Harlem, for an insider’s tour of the community. We’ll stroll Harlem’s streets, exploring its beautiful brownstones and remnants of its fabled past (often hidden in plain sight). Some of the historic sites we’ll see include Strivers’ Row, Abyssinian Baptist Church, the original “Swing Street,” Harlem YMCA, and the Hotel Theresa, a center of the Civil Rights Movement.
As we explore, I’ll share tales of Harlem’s illustrious past – days of the “Harlem Renaissance” and nights in the Cotton Club or Savoy Ballroom. And we’ll celebrate Harlemites like Langston Hughes, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Malcolm X and Maya Angelou.
We’ll also experience contemporary Harlem, which includes community gardens, vibrant street art, boutiques, music venues, and superb food – from authentic Soul Food to Haute Cuisine.
Of course, no trip to Harlem is complete without a visit to 125th Street, the commercial heart of Harlem and home to the world-famous Apollo Theater.
